New Encores was initially formed as "Encore Incubator" in 2014 as a way to start thinking about how people, particularly at midlife and beyond, start thinking about new endeavors, challenges, and opportunities in the second half of life. As an initial experiment, I ran an encore support group session during the early months of 2015. The original group format is discussed below, and some post-group comments are provided on the Feedback page. Currently, I am teaching/facilitating a course called "Midlife Through Retirement: A Path Forward" through North Seattle College. I am also working with others provider organizations and professionals to envision how to best serve the needs and interests of those in the "second half of life."
New Encores aims to serve three functions, which, for simplicity, I'll call seed, incubator, and accelerator. What does this mean? "Seed" will provide outreach and education to raise awareness about encore issues for those who wish to live "the second half" (around 50 and over) part of their lives more intentionally to create new opportunities, health, and well-being. "Incubator" will serve individuals in their personal endeavor to create change or opportunities through strength-based group sessions, group facilitation, and individualized coaching. "Accelerator" will serve as an information and referral service to help individuals address unique and specialized needs by connecting them to specialists, professionals, organizations, and resources.
Ultimately, we nor our pursuits are defined by age or some stage of life. We seek change, growth, and personal fulfillment throughout life, and we are assisted in our personal quests and our collective work through the wisdom, kindness, character, and knowledge of others. To this end, I am grateful that my work with New Encores is supported by wise, kind, and knowledgeable individuals in my "brain trust," my network of professional colleagues and practitioners at the UW and in the larger community.
Group Format New Encores support group is not intended to be a social group, although it may be friendly; the goal is to have productive meetings that support individual growth towards second acts. The participants will be asked to identify what they wish to gain from this group and to work towards their personal goals, however vague or specific, small or large, or whatever the issue may be. Even an intention to seek internal movement, a commitment to seek change, is a sufficient goal. Members will agree to treat everything shared in the group confidentiality and to treat each member with respect and honor their right to privacy. This is an outcomes based group, meaning that our participation is intentional and participation is to support and nurture change and/or development; not simply to vent.
In addition to discussion among participants, a variety of methods may be used to assist in the exploratory and planning process. We can also address practical matters, such as networking, resumes, and developing tools and resources to support your next steps.
